Ueli Steck erreicht Mount Everest

Der Schweizer Ueli Steck hat am Freitag – 18.05.2012 um 13:30 Uhr – geschafft, was ihm vor einem Jahren noch verwehrt geblieben ist.
Ohne künstlichen Sauerstoff erreichte Ueli Steck den Gipfel des Mount Everest. Letztes Jahr musste Ueli Steck noch wenige Meter unterhalb des Gipfels umkehren.

Ueli Steck left Base Camp May 15 and headed to Camp 2, where he enjoyed a nice breakfast before heading to the South Col
on May 17. His summit push began after midnight on May 18 and he summited at 1:30 p.m. Steck summited with Tenzing,
a 21-year-old friend from Nepal, who also had the goal of summiting Everest without supplemental oxygen this year.
“Tenzing and I have a great time on the mountain,” said Steck. “He got used to salami and cheese and I’ve gotten used to the
Nepali music.”
After a successful acclimatization trip on Lobuche Peak earlier this spring, Steck and Mountain Hardwear athlete
Freddie Wilkinson were limited by unstable conditions. Massive amounts of snowfall meant that the faces of Cholatse,
Ama Dablam and Tawoche were covered in deep snow and avalanches were prevalent. A direct ascent on Cholatse was
prevented by a layer of loose snow on the face so the duo headed to the Southwest Ridge of Ama Dablam for further
acclimatization. With the limited options, Steck and Wilkinson called an end to the initial acclimatization trip and Steck headed
off to Everest. [..]

Ebenso einen Aufstiegsversuch ohne künstlichen Sauerstoff auf den Mount Everest versucht momentan Ralf Dujmovits, der bereits alle 14 Achttausender erfolgreich bestiegen hat. Den Mount Everest hatte er damals allerdings mit Zuhilfenahme von künstlichen Sauerstoff bestiegen.
